Short sleeve shirt: When were you first told to not button the top button?

I don’t think anyone ever told me, I just knew intuitively not to button it.
I wasn’t told a reason, just suppose it was a given, like zipping one’s fly all the way to the top.
My opinion of someone who buttons the top button on a short sleeve shirt is that they are perhaps rather particular, socially awkward(i.e., NERD), or hiding a hickey.
1. Can’t remember.
2. It’s more comfortable, and buttoning the top button is unnecessary.
3. He/she isn’t bothered by buttoning it to the top. There’s one short-sleeve shirt I have that I almost always button to the top simply because of how big the neck on the shirt is.
No one ever told me that… I wonder if thats why people say "look here comes a member of the nerd herd" when I walk down the aisles at walmart wearing my trusty pocket protector
1: When wearing ones cravat.
