When wearing a button down short sleeve shirt should a guy tuck it in or let it hang loose over his pants?

When you’re wearing "business casual" in the Summer and you put on a button down short sleeved shirt, should you tuck it in or let it hang loose outside of your pants? I’ve seen both approaches and the tuck in looks nerdy and not stylish at all. But I feel a bit self conscious with the untucked look as it seems too informal even though it seems more in-style these days.

If the shirt is made with a straight hem all around and is of a nice material, not too thin, so that it hangs nicely, this can be a good and not overly casual look. Much of the effect depends on the quality of the garments. Straight-hemmed shirts are meant to be worn untucked. On the other hand I would never recommend letting a shirt hang out if it has the traditional curved shirttail shape hem.

Depends. If you are wearing an undershirt, i would be more inclined to go for the tuck-in. Just make sure that the shirt is a good fit and that you are wearing a decent belt and you’ll look fine. By ‘good fit’ I mean the right size, and making sure it doesn’t hang down past your butt.

    No undershirt = untucked, period.

I’d say tuck it in. It’s better to look a little nerdy and still remain professional looking than to look like a beach bum at work. People loose well deserved promotions because of stuff like this.. Always look ahead and think or your job future. If you’re up for a promotion or raise and another employee has similar qualifications, a professional appearance could easily make the difference.

personally i like guys who tuck it in. to me it just looks better. makes the guy look like he actually cares about how he dresses and didn’t just take his clothes out of the hamper.

As long as it is a nice button down shirt with a squared off bottom (instead of those tails that you get on dress shirts) with a tidy pair of slacks and shoes there is nothing wrong with leaving it untucked.

It depends on a couple of things….how hot it actually is, what style of button down u have, ur job, and ur age….but for a work envoriment i would alwasy go with tucked in and look like a nerd….
